NEW DELHI: An elderly beggar was found unconscious by rescue team 1122 on Khushab Road in Sargodha district of Pakistan’s Punjab province with over 500,000 rupees (160,544 Indian rupees) in his pockets. The man was in possession of 534,000 Pakistani rupees and a passport showing multiple travels to Saudi Arabia.

He was released from the hospital and had his money and belongings recovered, Geo News reported. Neighbours told rescuers that the man was a regular beggar in the area.

Last September, concerns were raised that Pakistani nationals were misusing Umra visas to beg in Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development reported the issue to the Senate Committee on Overseas Pakistanis, The News reported.

Speaking at a standing committee meeting, the secretary of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis said 90 percent of beggars detained abroad are Pakistanis. “The ambassadors of Iraq and Saudi Arabia have reported that these arrests have led to overcrowding in prisons,” he told the Senate committee. “Most of the pickpockets caught inside the Masjid al-Haram in Saudi Arabia are from Pakistan and they were using their Umra visas for begging purposes.”
