“Game 7” may be two of the most fitting words in sports, perhaps only surpassed when a team is trying to overturn a 3-0 series deficit. That’s because in the history of the major North American professional sports with playoff series (NHL, NBA, MLB), 407 teams had held a 3-0 lead prior to this Stanley Cup Final, and only five teams across all three leagues had blew a lead to lose the series.

The good news for the Edmonton Oilers is that four of those have come in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, except they will be playing on home ice against the Florida Panthers as the NHL season gets off to an epic start in Sunrise, Fla. Connor McDavid was huge in Games 4 and 5, scoring eight points (three goals, five assists) to help Edmonton get back in the series, but the Oilers’ penalty killing has also been a big hit: Edmonton has stopped 18 of 19 penalties in this series and 46 of their past 47 in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Florida needs some energy after losing their last three games 18-5 and finishing each with mediocre results. Sam Reinhart (-3), Matthew Tkachuk (-5) and Carter Verhaeghe (-9) have been completely subdued in their last three games, and the Panthers need their big stars to step up to avoid losing a Cup final for the second straight year and to become the first team since 1942 to lose a Cup final despite holding a 3-0 lead at the start of the series.

End of 1st period: Oilers, Panthers tied 1-1

The Panthers’ Carter Verhaeghe put the home team ahead with an early goal, but the Oilers’ Mattias Janmark answered a few minutes later to tie the score at 1-1. Florida now has a slight 7-6 lead over Edmonton in shots, as they stood at the end of the first period.

The Panthers took the lead 1-0 with a power play.

This was the first time the Panthers had the lead since Game 3, and I think it’s a big win for their mental strength given how things have gone recently.

The Panthers went from -3000 odds to win the Stanley Cup to a coin flip in nine days.

Here’s how the odds for the Panthers to win the Stanley Cup have changed since the Stanley Cup Finals began:

    Before Game 1: -130 (bet $130 to win $100)

    Before 2nd match: -250

    Before Game 3: -550

    Before the 4th match: -3000

    Before the 5th match: -1200

    Before Game 6: -350

    Before Game 7: -110

On June 15th, when the Oilers and Panthers began Game 4, Florida was leading the series 3-0 and needed to bet $3,000 to win $100. The implied odds of a -3000 favorite winning were 96.7%, which seems low for a team leading 3-0 in a playoff series.

When the Stanley Cup odds were first released before the season, the Panthers had odds of +1800 to win. When the playoffs started, they were +700. Confidence in the Panthers wasn’t as high; only 4.6% of people bet on Florida to win. But anyone who had a Panthers ticket must have been really happy after Florida took a 3-0 lead. And now those bets are 50/50. The Oilers and Panthers are matched at -110 odds to win Game 7 at BetMGM.

Please see here for the detail.

If the Stanley Cup were decided solely by fan numbers, the winner would be obvious (because of the small sample size).

As per the warmup, the Oilers’ lineup and matchup will be the same as in Game 6.

Home ice advantage? Maybe not for the Panthers.

Oilers and Panthers prepare for historic Game 7: ‘This is not a normal game’

Either the Edmonton Oilers or the Florida Panthers will hoist the Stanley Cup after Game 7 on Monday night (8 p.m. ET on ABC). Whatever the outcome, it would be historic for the Panthers, who would win their first championship, or for the Oilers, who would pull off the first complete series upset in a Stanley Cup Final since 1942.

The Oilers have already made history: They are the first NHL team since the 1944-45 Detroit Red Wings to be down 3-0 in the Cup Final and send the game to a Game 7. If they win Monday night, they’ll join the 1941-42 Toronto Maple Leafs as the only teams to complete the task.

“We all understand it’s not a normal game, but in our minds we have to make it as normal as possible,” Oilers captain Connor McDavid said Sunday. “Our team has done a great job of doing our best in those big moments and I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

After the Panthers won Game 3, 4-3, it looked like Florida would end up being crowned champions. Florida was in complete control of the series and the Oilers had no answers. After Edmonton avoided elimination with an 8-1 rout in Game 4, it looked like the Panthers would bounce back and win Game 5 at home.

But they didn’t. The Oilers woke up, smashing the series away from the Panthers. McDavid scored eight points in wins in Games 4 and 5. Now he’s helping bring the franchise to the game every young hockey player dreams of.

Is history in the Oilers’ favor?

Will the Edmonton Oilers try to achieve a historic feat in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday (8 p.m. ET, ABC)? The Florida Panthers will be hoping to finally pull off a win in Game 4 of the series after failing in their previous three attempts, including a 5-1 loss at Rogers Place on Friday.

It remains to be seen if the Oilers can pull off a series comeback after falling behind 3-0, but they have already made history by forcing a Game 7.

Edmonton became the 211th team in NHL history to fall behind 3-of-7 in a series. By winning Game 6, Edmonton became just the 10th team to come back and force a Game 7, and the first in the last decade.

But winning three straight games to force a win-or-lose Game 7 doesn’t automatically win the series. In only four of the last nine series has the losing team come back to win the all-important Game 4, and that has only happened twice since 1975, and only once in the Stanley Cup Finals.
