Bangalore: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also the Karnataka state president of the Indian Youth Congress, on Friday announced that the Karnataka chapter of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) will carry out a membership drive and hold intra-party elections in August and September.
Addressing a press conference at the KPCC office, he said the Youth Congress membership drive and internal elections would help produce new leadership.
“The nomination process has already begun from July 24 and the last date for filing nominations is August 2. The nominations will be screened from August 3 to 8 and the candidates will be finalised on August 9. The candidate who secures the most number of votes will be elected as the president and the remaining successful candidates will be allotted other posts,” Shivakumar said.
He explained that recruitment for Youth Congress membership will run from August 16 to September 16 and those interested can register online.
The newly enrolled members will be eligible to vote in Youth Congress elections at taluk, district and state levels. Persons below 35 years of age are eligible to become members of the Youth Congress. Details can be found on the IYC mobile app, he said.
“We want to develop grassroots level leadership and hence we are conducting internal elections for the Youth Congress. Internal elections will also be held at the national level,” Shivakumar added.
Shivakumar said reservation quota would be provided for all sections including women, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and minorities.
Reservation for SC/ST has been given in five districts – Ballari, Mandya, Bagarakote, Belagavi and Bengaluru Central, he pointed out.
Shivakumar also outlined the party’s plans to celebrate 100 years since Mahatma Gandhi became the president of the Indian National Congress.
“It is 100 years since Mr Gandhi became the president of the Indian National Congress. We have constituted a committee under the guidance of Mr H K Patil and Mr Veerappa Moily to charter modalities for celebrating the centenary,” the Karnataka Indian National Congress president said.
