On National Signing Day, Brent Key and Georgia Tech scored a major recruiting win by signing four-star running back Anthony Carey to Georgia Tech over a number of other schools. Carey enrolled early, participated in spring practice and will likely challenge for playing time second only to Jamal Haynes this season.
College football expert Phil Steele also spoke highly of Carey this season, ranking him as one of the best freshman running backs in the country, ranking Carey 19th in his rankings of the top freshman running backs in the country.
I think Carey has the potential to be an impactful freshman for Georgia Tech this season, and while the Yellow Jackets are still searching for a No. 2 back behind Jamaal Haynes from the spring, Carey will fill that role.
Below is a scouting report on Carey coming out of high school from 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins.
“He’s a well-built running back prospect with great vision, quick feet and great balance. He averaged 6.9 yards per carry over his final three years of high school, rushing for a total of 3,151 yards and 48 touchdowns in 28 games. His build has not been independently verified, but he is estimated to be just under 6 feet tall and around 195 pounds. With some weight training in the college weight room, he should eventually be able to bulk up. He makes quick cuts to evade tacklers and then overtakes them on his first charge. He is not afraid of contact and tends to go for holes with all his might. A true top player.” “While he may lack the end gear, he has proven to be quite creative at the second level and will do everything in his power to gain yards. He didn’t get much coverage out of the backfield at Carroll Wood Day, but he showed flashes of brilliance as a pass-catcher on the offseason circuit, suggesting he can play at all levels. If he can find a way to get past the hardened college defensive linemen, he could be a winner on third down. He should be viewed as a well-rounded ball carrier with good positional feel who has a chance to make an impact on Saturday.”
