Planning for the future, coaching staff lures Churchland’s Jones to Virginia Tech

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WTKR) — Sincere Jones still has some work to do in her basketball career at Churchland, but she has a path forward when it comes to collegiate efforts.

The Truckers senior verbally committed to Virginia Tech last weekend, becoming the first in the Hokies’ 2025 freshman class, and he became convinced during his official visit that Blacksburg was the best place for him.

“I love this program and I love the plan they have for me,” Jones said. “The coaching staff has been great. I’ve been to a few practices and I like the organization and the way it’s run.”

So what plans does Virginia Tech have for the Churchland standout? Churchland says the program plans to prepare him to reach even greater heights in his basketball career.

“Basically it was to make me an NBA player,” he said. “They showed me some things, comparisons and stuff, and told me how to make me better. I loved it.”

As a junior, Jones led the Trackers to the Class 4 state quarterfinals, where they lost to Varina. He is currently ranked 43rd nationally and 13th in Virginia as a power forward for the class of 2025 by 24-7Sports. Now that the decision has been made, he can focus solely on his final year of high school basketball.

“I just have to focus on basketball, keep training, get in shape and play the game,” Jones said. “I don’t have to worry about other phone calls. I just have to focus on the program I want to be a part of and get ready for the season.”

When his senior year is over, he’ll be on the ACC stage, but it will mean staying in-state so his family and friends can watch more of his games and he can have a little easier time back home.

“My whole family can come watch my games,” Jones pointed out. “It’s only a four-hour drive. My family can come to some of my games, but most of my games are on the East Coast.”

Virginia Tech finished the 2023-2024 season with a 19-15 record and 10-10 in the ACC.
