The United States conceded five goals for the first time in 15 years and lost to Colombia, 5-1. Several moments early in the second half, namely: Tim WeirAside from the goal, Colombia proved superior in every aspect. The most notable difference was in the technical aspect, as evidenced by the clean touch and accurate shooting under pressure from Los Cafeteros. None of the 10 attempts on the U.S. goal required a save, and they plagued the U.S. with passes in various parts of the field. The last time Colombia scored that many goals was in 2013, in a 5-0 win at home to Bolivia.

Goalkeeper
It took lightning-fast reflexes to stop the Colombian shot from close range. Matt TurnerTurner’s hands were near the ball when John Arias smashed it into the near post (0-1) and when Rafael Borre scored with a bicycle kick (0-2). Richard Rios’ 12-yard shot was deflected off Cameron Carter-Vickers (1-3). Turner started to lean the wrong way when Jorge Carrascal shot (1-4). Luis Sinisterra had room to shoot for Colombia’s fifth goal (1-5). Turner twice left the penalty area, once with a good through pass, and the second time he was booked for handball. He made a diving save to stop James Rodriguez’s 16-yard shot, which was Turner’s only save of the game.

Defender
Right rear Joe Scali He stifled the dynamic Luis Diaz but gave the left winger time to hold onto the ball, contributing to his failure to deal with a loose ball before Colombia’s second goal. Scully misplayed a pass while trying to help the USA build up and advanced too boldly upfield during the breakdown before Colombia’s fourth goal.
Left back Anthony Robinson Robinson handed the ball to Arias for the first goal and then fell back in vain for the third. After setting up chances for Folarin Balogun and Christian Pulisic in the first half, Robinson was rarely accurate on attack. Diaz’s shot that hit the post came after Robinson was denied by Daniel Muñoz.
Centre Back Tim Ream Riem didn’t seem to sense the danger when Arias tried to shoot on goal in the sixth minute. Riem headed in a Colombian corner kick but couldn’t get a shot off from the danger zone before the 19th minute goal. His central partner Chris Richards He avoided making any big mistakes but didn’t interfere much with Colombia’s shooting practice.

Midfielder
Including Colombia’s first two goals. Johnny Cardozo Cardoso was often close to attacking but was unable to join in. Before scoring Colombia’s third goal, Cardoso lost the ball in midfield to John Duran. He got back but was caught in no man’s land as Sinisterra played a pass to Rios. Joe Reyna Reyna had a couple of great crossfield balls and was involved in the build-up to Weah’s goal, and his free kick assisted Haji Wright’s header, but he wasted the next free kick, overhitting a through pass despite the accuracy the U.S. needs against such a formidable opponent. Weston McKennie He just couldn’t find a way to contribute offensively or defensively.

forward
Folarin Balogun After receiving a pass in the first minute, he fired a shot wide from 16 yards. Christian Pulisic Balogun’s pass was a six-yard shot towards a Colombian defender. Tim Weir Weir provided the perfect assist for the USA goal, passing from midfield to Balogun, who then raced into the penalty area to score (1-2). The USA’s lone goal was a unique display against a team that relied on quick attacks. Another example of the rare dynamism of the USA attack was when Pulisic’s header, which struck the post after a one-two with Robinson in the first half, exemplified the play. Weir was robbed of the ball by Carrascal in the USA half, setting up Colombia’s fourth goal.

Replacement
forward Haji WrightWright’s promising start, dribbling through the Colombian defence, ended with an offside pass to Balogun. Wright had two chances to score, one with a header and the other with a shot over the crossbar. Just seconds after coming on, Cameron Carter-Vickers He failed to control a simple pass and mis-trapped the ball, setting up a big chance for James Rodriguez, while Colombia’s final goal came after he intercepted a Carter-Vickers pass in the middle. Ricardo Pepi They could have done more to counter Carter-Vickers’ weak serve. Yunus Musa The Colombian provided the assist for Rios’ goal and appeared to play it in slow motion against Sinisterra. Malik Tillman He showed little interest in helping the defense, with Tillman staring at the ball instead of checking for an open Colombian.
