Authorities plan immediate steps to improve energy access in Gwadar and GB as part of broader power sector reforms

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday approved electricity projects for Gwadar and Gilgit-Baltistan while chairing a meeting on ongoing power sector reforms.

The prime minister cleared the immediate implementation of a comprehensive plan to address electricity supply issues in Gwadar Port City. He said uninterrupted power supply would support domestic economic activity and investment, adding that improved facilities would help Gwadar’s port develop into a major hub for future economic activity.

Sharif also directed that work begin immediately on a 100MW solar project in Gilgit-Baltistan to ensure a stable supply of clean electricity. He said the welfare and economic development of the region remain among the federal government’s top priorities and that steps are being taken to promote industrial activity, investment and broader economic development there.

The prime minister commended recommendations from the committee led by Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal and the Ministry of Power on resolving electricity issues, and instructed the ministry to ensure effective implementation of the comprehensive strategy covering immediate, short-term and long-term measures.

Officials briefed the meeting that steps are underway to ensure electricity supply for domestic and commercial consumers in Gwadar. The meeting was further informed that the government will provide land, communications, infrastructure and other required facilities for electricity projects in Gilgit-Baltistan within the specified timeframe.
