Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 6 congratulated reformist candidate Massoud Pezechkian on his victory in the Iranian presidential runoff election.
“I look forward to working closely together to further strengthen our warm and long-standing bilateral relations for the benefit of our peoples and the region,” Modi wrote on social media platform X.
India and Iran maintain warm relations despite Iran’s marginalization among Western countries, including the United States, while India seeks greater security cooperation with the United States.
In May, the two countries signed a deal to develop and equip Iran’s long-stalled Chabahar port project, with Washington warning that Indian companies working on the project risked sanctions.
Pezeshkian won about 54 percent of the vote, but in the second round his ultra-conservative rival Said Djalili won about 44 percent.
Elections were not scheduled until 2025 but were brought forward after President Ebrahim Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash.
