RAWALPINDI:
A political tug-of-war has erupted between two PML-N leaders in Rawalpindi over the long-vacant chairmanship of the District Zakat Council. The post has remained unfilled for the past two years, stalling the distribution of Zakat funds to beneficiaries.
Member of National Assembly Malik Abrar Ahmed is lobbying to appoint Malik Imran as chairman, while Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi is pushing for Raja Jibran Rafaqat. In addition to these two frontrunners, three other PML-N candidates are also in contention for the position.
According to sources in the Zakat Department, the names of Malik Imran and Raja Jibran Rafaqat have been shortlisted and sent to the Punjab government for final approval. The appointment is expected to be made soon after Eid.
Due to the prolonged vacancy, the distribution of Zakat funds has been at a standstill for two years, leaving thousands of beneficiaries without financial assistance.
