Poland will be without key striker Robert Lewandowski for their Euro 2024 opener against injury-plagued Holland.

Barcelona forward Lewandowski, 35, will miss the Group D match at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg with a hamstring injury.

There had been fears that Poland’s all-time leading goalscorer would miss the entire group stage but coach Michal Probiesz is confident he will be back in time for the match against Austria on June 21.

“Robert will probably be in the team for the match against Austria,” he said.

“His treatment is progressing and medical staff are doing all they can to help him recover well.”

Meanwhile, the Netherlands had to deal with the late absences of playmaker Frenkie de Jong (ankle) and Atalanta midfielder Teun Coopemeiners (groin).

The Netherlands are looking to win the European Championships for the first time since 1988 and go into the tournament as one of the favourites.

Current manager Ronald Koeman was part of the team that beat West Germany in the semi-finals in Hamburg to win the trophy.

From Disney to the Euros – Two people answer late-night calls

Injury problems for the Netherlands in the closing stages led Koeman to call up Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee and Borussia Dortmund wing-back Ian Maatsen.

Zurikzy was at Walt Disney World in Florida when she got the call, and later posted a photo of herself at the theme park with the caption, “When I got the call to leave Disney and go to Europe.”

Meanwhile, Maatsen was on board a yacht near Mykonos when he received the invitation to join the camp, and without hesitation he dropped everything and headed for Germany.

His father, Edward, drove three hours from their home in the Netherlands to Borussia Dortmund, where Maatsen plays, to pick up his son’s cleats.

He then drove another three hours to the Dutch campsite in Wolfsburg to drop them off.

“We know you’re always going to be a part of the family,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

“This European Championship is truly the greatest honour. As a parent I am very proud and will do everything in my power to keep this championship on track and everything around it as stable as possible.”

How can I watch the Netherlands vs Poland match?

The match will be shown live on BBC One and will feature presenter Mark Chapman, as well as David Moyes, Danny Murphy and Ashley Williams.

Coverage begins at 13:35 BST, with BBC Radio 5 Live providing full match commentary from 14:00.

You can also watch the match and follow live text updates on the BBC Sport website and app.

Match Statistics

  • Poland are winless in their last 12 meetings with the Netherlands in all competitions (five draws, seven losses) since a 2-0 home win in Euro 1980 qualifier.

  • This will be the first time Poland and the Netherlands meet at a major tournament. As of Euro 2024, only Germany (19) have won more European championships than the Netherlands (17).

  • Poland have played in five consecutive European Championships but have not qualified in any of the past 12 tournaments and have only won two of their 14 matches (excluding penalty shootouts) at the tournament, with both wins coming in the group stage in 2016 (seven draws, five losses).

  • The Netherlands will be competing in their 11th European Championship. The last time it was played solely in Germany was in 1988, when they won the tournament, beating the Soviet Union in the final (2-0).

  • Since 1988, only Germany (six) have reached more European semi-finals than the Netherlands (four), but the Netherlands have not reached the quarter-finals since 2004.
