  • Police found explosives in the car of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the man who shot Donald Trump.
  • The FBI identified Crooks, who was shot and killed by Secret Service agents, as the shooter.
  • Authorities, along with a bomb disposal unit, searched Crooks’ home and interviewed his family.

Police found explosives in the car of Thomas Matthew Crooks, the suspect who allegedly plotted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

The FBI identified Crooks, who was shot and killed by a Secret Service agent, as the shooter, and a source familiar with the investigation told The Wall Street Journal that authorities found explosives in a car Crooks parked near the site of Saturday’s rally.

Police responded to reports of a suspicious package and sent several bomb squad members to the scene, according to the outlet. Authorities also found an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle next to Crooks’ body, according to The New York Times.

Dozens of police vehicles surrounded Crooks’ home in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, after the shooting on Saturday night, according to USA Today. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and an explosives squad were reportedly at the home.

Police searched the home “well into the night” to clear the scene and make the area safe, and interviewed Crooks’ family, the Journal reported.

“It’s insane that someone would do something like this,” Crooks’ neighbor, Dan Maloney, told USA Today, adding that he had at one point planned to attend the rally.

The FBI did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment about the explosives found in Crooks’ car.
