SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota (Dakota News Now) – The presidential debate While the event is usually used by each party to make the case for what they want to do going forward, last night’s debate became about what each party has done in the past.
“Candidates were more likely to look back than forward, which influenced the content of their answers,” said Dr. Julia Hellwege, a political science professor at the University of South Dakota.
Many issues were raised by the leading candidates, including immigration, climate change, abortion and the economy, but these issues did not make the headlines.
With Trump, there were concerns about his honesty during the debates.
“When fact checkers look at the list, there are a number of statements where Trump has exaggerated things or where he has taken something and put his own spin on it and made it different from the facts,” said Dave Price, Iowa political director for Gray TV.
And there were concerns about Biden’s mental health.
“There was a moment very early in the debate when the president seemed to lose his train of thought, looked down and then said something incomprehensible about Medicare,” Price said.
After the debate, a CNN panel said many Democrats were concerned about Biden’s chances as the Democratic nominee.
“In theory, we could come to this convention in August and have the delegates choose a different candidate, but that’s a complicated process and that’s a story you’ll be hearing here in the coming weeks,” Price said.
At this point, he is only a candidate, but it is unlikely he will be selected.
“I think they’re more likely to support Biden, to stay united within their party and to focus on their team and the candidate their team picks, rather than showing weakness or concern and searching for a nominee at this stage,” Hellwege said.
The Democratic National Convention will be held in Chicago in late August.
Hellwege also urged voters to remember that their vote matters and that it will not be the only election in November.
