PMQ Preview: Deputy Dowden expected to step up Rayner police investigation on behalf of Mr Sunak

Gurpreet Nawan, Political Correspondent

Angela Rayner has kept a low profile since news broke a few weeks ago of a police investigation into her living conditions.

She has largely avoided direct questions and answers with journalists.

Following the persistent efforts of James Daley, Conservative MP for Bury North, Greater Manchester Police say more than a dozen officers are now investigating whether she breached election law. did.

Mr Rayner has issued a statement denying his innocence, but there is no doubt that the Conservatives will raise the issue again at PMQs.

Today’s session will be joined by MPs Oliver Dowden and Angela Reiner, as Rishi Sunak is in Germany.

Mr. Reiner prepares his defense.

She may accuse the Conservatives of fabricating a police investigation to distract from their performance, with a week to go before local elections.

The timing is fortuitous for Labor.

This comes just days after former Conservative MP Mark Menzies resigned from parliament following damaging allegations about misuse of campaign funds.

Labor MPs are now pushing for a police investigation.

PMQs are set for a major policy announcement by the Prime Minister, who pledged to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030.

That’s troubling for Labor. This puts to rest the opposition’s promise to meet the 2.5% target “as soon as resources permit”.

The Conservatives are once again cornering Labor over finances, forcing the party to find ways to meet the government’s pledges without raising taxes or cutting spending.
