The teacher recruitment process in Maharashtra, which was delayed again due to model code of conduct for elections, is likely to resume after the Legislative Council elections were postponed.
Seven members of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (Vidhan Parishad) are elected by graduates, while the remaining seven members are elected by teachers from their constituencies. Maharashtra is one of his six states that has a provision for one-twelfth of the MLCs to be elected by teachers and alumni respectively.
On May 8, the Election Commission announced MLC elections from two postgraduate and teacher constituencies on June 10 respectively. No ad hoc appointments will be made under the model code of conduct, which will come into force when the Election Commission announces the election schedule. And even regular appointments may be postponed until after the election.
The recruitment drive for over 22,000 teaching posts in government and aided schools in Maharashtra, which started in December 2022, has been delayed due to various reasons since then. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections were another reason, while the ECI directed the education ministry to restart the recruitment process in districts where polling had ended.
Elections were announced on June 10 following the expiry of the term of office of four MLCs from postgraduate and teacher constituencies in Mumbai, Nashik and Konkan districts.
However, some stakeholders expressed to the ECI that these elections should be postponed until after the school summer holidays. Agreeing, the ECI announced on May 14 that elections in these four constituencies would be postponed and new dates would be announced at a later date.
“The Legislative Council elections have been postponed by the Election Commission, so the code of conduct regarding Legislative Council voting is not applicable at this time,” Education Commissioner Suraj Mandare said. Therefore, in accordance with the orders given earlier, the constituencies that have completed the voting process should immediately complete the process of appointing candidates and fill in the information in the spreadsheet. ”
A detailed review of each district will be conducted on Friday, he added.
