Jan Suraj Abhiyan, a grassroots movement spearheaded by political strategist Prashant Kishore, is set to evolve into an official political party on October 2nd afternoon.

Jan Suraj rally organiser and election strategist Prashant Kishore was addressing a party and state-level meeting for the Bihar Assembly elections at Bapu Auditorium in Patna on Sunday.

To lay the foundations for this change, Jan Suraj will be holding eight state-level meetings over the next few weeks, bringing together over 150,000 campaign stakeholders from across Bihar.

Only on HT to know more about tax impact, key announcements, sectoral analysis and more from Union Budget 2024. Read now.

The main agenda for these meetings will be to finalize the process of founding the new party, including establishing a leadership structure, drafting party constitution and setting the party’s priorities.

For this, a meeting of district and block level officers was held in Patna today.

Known for his strategic acumen in Indian politics, Prashant Kishore is the driving force behind the Jan Suraj movement. Launched with a vision to bring about transformational change in Bihar, the movement focuses on engaging with people at the grassroots level to address key issues such as education, healthcare and employment.

The party’s founding date, October 2, is symbolic as it coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a man synonymous with grassroots activism and political reform.

Jan Suraj is aiming to form a party to contest the 2025 state assembly elections at a time when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar faces fierce anti-incumbency forces and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has been unable to transcend his traditional Muslim Yadav vote base.

Earlier this month, the Rajya Sabha Bharatiya Janata Party (RJD) had issued a circular warning its members not to get involved in the Jan Suraj movement.

A screenshot of the letter was shared by Jan Suraaj on his X handle with the comment, “RJD, which claims to be the strongest political party in Bihar, is nervous at the mere announcement of Jan Suraaj becoming a political party.”

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
