Georgia Tech Chancellor Angel Cabrerra’s team placed sixth in the 2024 Just for Fun division of the Trans-Tahoe Relays over the weekend in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Since its creation in 1976, the annual open water race has become one of the premier swimming events in the U.S. Invited by Georgia Tech alumnus Dick Bergmark, Cabrera completed the 11.4-mile relay race as part of a team of six swimmers.
Other team members included swimming and diving head coach Courtney Seely-Hart, and former Yellow Jacket swimmers Mike Wise, Jin Lee and Rodrigo Correia. Each swimmer swam for 30 minutes and then alternated every 10 minutes for the remainder of the race. The GT Fun team crossed the finish line in 4 hours, 23 minutes and 57 seconds.
Cabrera and his teammates weren’t the only Yellow Jackets team competing in the tournament, as three other Georgia Tech teams also finished in the top 10.

Running alongside the famous relay race was a 15.5km solo race, won by former Yellow Jacket swimmer and Olympian Vesna Shelnutt (pictured below) with a final time of 4 hours, 11 minutes and 23 seconds.
The race began as a competition between two teams of Olympic Club members. Now the event welcomes 250 teams to Lake Tahoe, promoting teamwork and environmental conservation.
