Mushahid Hussain says ‘historic visit’ will serve as ‘stimulus for development of bilateral relations’

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif plans to visit Russia from March 3-5, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported on Thursday, citing Pakistani Ambassador to Moscow Faisal Niaz Tirmizi.

Russia urged Afghanistan and Pakistan to halt cross-border attacks and resolve their differences through diplomatic means.

Russian News Agency TASS also reported PM Shehbaz’s visit to Moscow, referring to remarks by former senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed.

“The visit of the prime minister of Pakistan to Russia will take place next week,” he stated while speaking at the Moscow-Islamabad media forum on February 27.

According to Sayed, “this will be a historic visit” that will serve as “an additional stimulus for the development of bilateral relations”.

TASS also reported that Tirmizi previously hinted that PM Shehbaz would visit Russian in the first quarter of 2026.

In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed growing relations between his country and Pakistan as “mutually beneficial” with cooperation expanding across sectors.

Tirmizi had formally presented his credentials to the Russian president during a ceremony held at the Grand Kremlin Palace.

The X account of the Russian Embassy in Pakistan had quoted Putin as saying on the occasion: “We are continuing close cooperation with Pakistan. Pakistan is a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which is the region’s largest regional organisation in terms of economic, technical, and human resources. Russia-Pakistan relations are mutually beneficial in the truest sense.”
