From Balenciaga to Baroque, there’s no denying that short hair is king in 2024, but right now, it’s the Bixies (aka Bob Pixies) that are taking center stage.
When it comes to summer hairstyles, we want maximum impact with minimum effort, so we think this face-framing style will be a staple for us…
What is a “Bixie” cut?
As the name suggests, it combines the best elements of a bob and a pixie cut, and if you’re looking for the ultimate example, look no further than Princess Diana, who, thanks to hairstylist Sam McKnight, embraced the style in many ways during the ’90s. And like other ’90s trends like claw clips and cycling shorts, Gen Z just can’t get enough of it.
This style is micro-bob length but with the uneven layers of a pixie cut for a cool-girl finish that’s super flattering and textured, and it’s a great way to ease into the style of a super short pixie cut without going through the lengthy process of growing your hair out.
“A typical pixie haircut is cut at the nape of the neck and gradually gets shorter towards the back,” explains Paul Percival, stylist and founder of Percy & Reid. “Length-wise, it can be anywhere between the chin and jawline. The ideal length is a little shorter than the chin, which gives the impression of a grown-out pixie hairstyle. For most people, the haircut actually works better if it’s cut quite ‘piecemeal’ – this means either raising the ends or cutting the ends so there’s no clear boundary.”

How to style “Vixy”…
Modern muses who are embracing ’90s style in the warmer months include Florence Pugh, Taylor Hill, and Sabrina Elba, and if there’s one thing we’ve learned from mining all that inspiration, it’s that you can make the style your own.
The best thing about this style is that it leaves out more length than a traditional pixie cut, giving you more freedom with your hair.
“The bikini is the perfect style for summer because it’s so versatile,” Paul explains. “Even though your hair feels short, it’s still flexible enough to create multiple styles. Straighten it, wave it, swept it back, swept it to one side, change the part – there are so many styling options with this cut, I love it.”
