Technology is increasingly intertwined with the core functions of every industry, including the financial industry. Many companies tout “artificial intelligence” as a radical solution to every problem, but they often don’t understand how artificial intelligence works or what data is used to train it. I can’t explain why it was used. Big Tech is tracking more and more user behavior and building ever-higher walled gardens. Product design may include factors that impede an individual’s ability to make apples-to-apples comparisons.

Technology is rapidly changing the way existing products and services work, but this does not change our obligations to existing laws. It is essential that governments have the necessary technical expertise to address and regulate this ever-evolving market.

In July 2022, the CFPB announced an initiative to recruit and retain talent with technical skills across core functions. Today, CFPB technicians conduct inspections of supervised entities, assist with investigations, and inform policy decisions to address emerging technologies.

The CFPB is currently launching a cross-government recruitment drive to incorporate technical experts into multiple agencies that share various consumer protection, competition, and civil rights mandates. At each government agency, engineers work to enforce federal laws and keep pace with rapidly evolving technology.

Build a pipeline of technical talent to enforce federal law

use joint employment engineers need only submit one application to the CFPB to be considered for employment with multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Federal Trade Commission, and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

This approach speeds up hiring and reduces the burden on job seekers. Additionally, consolidating and streamlining recruitment activities can save enforcement agencies significant effort and effort while maintaining ambitious and rigorous standards for recruitment and recruitment. We hope these collective efforts will help expand the way advanced technologies are monitored and addressed across government.

How do government technologists contribute to policy and enforcement?

Technologists work with lawyers and policy experts to hold companies accountable for misuse of technology and ensure markets are fair and competitive. We’re looking for experts in product design, user experience, research, software engineering, data science, machine learning, and product management.

We are looking for people who are curious, eager to learn, and excited about applying their expertise to solve complex, high-impact problems. These jobs are an opportunity to move beyond theoretical debates about artificial intelligence and instead ensure that our government develops and enforces policies that protect the rights, safety, and privacy of all Americans.

How to apply

In the coming months, the CFPB will use bulk hiring for the following technical roles:

  • Chief engineer – Serve as the agency’s lead technical expert, supporting other technical experts in a variety of areas to further advance strategic research and policy-making goals. This job posting is currently active and ends on May 28, 2024. Apply for Government Supervisory Senior Engineer position.
  • program technologist – Lead the work of a small, cross-functional research team to help monitor new entrants to financial markets. This job posting is expected to be published in his summer of 2024. mailing list Get notified when this job becomes available.

A federal resume is required to apply. This is usually multiple pages and a little more detailed than what you are used to. We are looking for a detailed story and relevant details that demonstrate how your experience meets the specialized experience required for the position. Based on evaluation, qualified applicants will be considered for employment in a variety of technical positions across multiple agencies.

Your work improves the lives of millions of Americans, and we need you. If you have questions about the hiring process, please email technologists@cfpb.gov or visit consumerfinance.gov/tech.
