Notification cites persistence of ‘threat perception’ based on assessment by law enforcement, intelligence agencies

Section 144 has been extended across the province until November 15, Saturday, announced the Punjab Home Department on Sunday.

The announcement comes after a previous order, dated November 2, extended the enforcement of Section 144 until November 8.

Section 144 enforces the complete ban on all forms of protest, gathering, rallies, sit-ins, and assemblies. It also restricts the gathering of four or more people in public places.

Further, it enforces a complete ban on the display of all types of weapons, licensed or unlicensed, as well as the use of loudspeakers, which may only be used for the call to prayer (Azaan) and the Friday sermon (Khutba).

The publication and distribution of provocative, hate-inciting, or sectarian material also remains banned. This includes any such content in pamphlets, on banners, or on social media, according to the notification.

Restrictions under Section 144 will not apply to funerals, burials, or wedding ceremonies, with officers and personnel on official duty, along with courts, also exempt.

The extension has come based on “latest reports and threat assessments shared by law enforcement and intelligence agencies,” which have made it evident, according to the notification, that “the threat perception to public peace, tranquility, and law and order has not abated”.
