On Monday, it was confirmed that the Beijiang water level at Qingyuan City’s Feilaixia Reservoir had exceeded the highest level in 50 years, Xinhua News Agency reported. Water flow to the Hiraikyo Hydroelectric Power Plant is near the highest in the past 100 years.
Dayoo.com, a Guangzhou-based news site owned by Guangzhou Daily News, said rescue teams were dispatched to relocate trapped residents in Shaoguan and transport food and other supplies.
Shaoguan, located in the northern part of the province, on Monday downgraded the city’s flood emergency response alert to level 3 of a four-tier warning system. Level 1 is the most severe.
More than 300 emergency workers were dispatched to six villages in Jiangwan City on Saturday where roads were cut off by landslides, rescuing trapped residents. At least six people in the village were injured, according to online news site The Paper.
Mobile phone and internet service was restored in the town on Sunday after a landslide cut communication cables.
In Qingyuan city in central Guangdong province, water levels reached the first floors of buildings in some areas on Sunday morning, inundating homes and businesses. According to Xinhua news agency, as of 4pm on Sunday, more than 60,000 residents had been removed from the affected areas.
Some schools in the hard-hit areas of Qingyuan city were closed on Monday.
The average rainfall across Guangdong province from 10 a.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Sunday was 121.8 mm (4.8 inches), according to the provincial water resources bureau.
The China Meteorological Administration predicted that the heavy rains would continue until Tuesday, with some areas in southeastern Guangdong province expected to receive 100 to 170 mm of rain in the 24 hours starting Monday afternoon.

The rain has also affected rail operations, with more than 300 trains either turned back or canceled between Friday and Sunday, according to China Railway Guangzhou Group. All trains resumed operations from Monday.
The group also visited the Menzhou Dam along the Beihe River and an elementary school in the town of Longgui, where residents have been evacuated since floods hit their homes.
