Red Lobster has closed dozens of seafood restaurants from sea to shining sea ahead of its announcement Sunday night that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Florida.

Red Lobster’s website lists 99 locations in 28 states as “temporarily closed.” For some restaurants, the closure may not be so temporary: Some of the restaurant’s kitchen equipment is being auctioned off on a restaurant liquidation company’s website.

What’s striking about the closures is how spread across the country the restaurants are. The seafood chain, founded in 1968, is the largest in the United States, with 551 locations in 44 states, according to court documents. Red Lobster says on its website that it has more than 700 locations worldwide.

As store closures continue, regulars ask:Will our beloved chain sleep with the fishes?

Red Lobster said it plans to use the bankruptcy proceedings to “drive operational improvements, streamline its business through store reductions and proceed with the sale of substantially all of its assets.”

Red Lobster said in a statement Sunday night that it would sell the business to a new company owned and controlled by its lenders. The statement also said the company’s restaurants would remain open during the Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

These restaurants are currently listed as temporarily closed on their website. Click on a state below to see their specific locations and addresses:
