Lewis could consolidate his No. 1 spot
The battle for the No. 1 quarterback spot has been fierce between USC commit Julian Lewis and LSU commit Bryce Underwood, with Ohio State commit Tavian St. Clair also joining the fray after recently being upgraded to a five-star.
The quarterback competition is intense, but there’s also a battle for the No. 1 overall spot in the 2025 Rivals250, currently held by Lewis, and his performance in Jacksonville could further solidify that spot.
The USC-bound is at his best in game situations where he seems just as comfortable slicing through defenses from the pocket and throwing passes while running away from pressure.

Can Smigiel be No. 1 again in 2026?

Five-star Brady Smigiel was ranked as the No. 1 quarterback in the first round of the 2026 rankings, but five-star Rider Lions took that top spot in the spring. The two quarterbacks from California may battle it out to the end, but the Folsom native has the edge at this point.
Smigiel is Rivals 5 stars As the lone underclassman quarterback, he’ll undoubtedly have a chance to make a big statement against some of the best prospects in 2025. The star player from Newbury Park, California, is mature beyond his years, is a coach’s son, has a gym routine and put up big numbers last season as Florida State and other teams vied to acquire him.

Russell gains attention on national stage

Perhaps no quarterback has performed better in offseason regional events than recent SMU-to-Alabama transfer Kieron Russell. The four-star recruit from Duncanville, Texas, has risen to as high as No. 6 in the pro-style quarterback class but will have a chance to move even higher in the coming weeks.
Russell reminds me a lot of Jayden Daniels, who was a first-round NFL draft pick around the same time — lean and built, but with a bouncy arm, precision and special instincts.

Will a new five-star quarterback emerge?

There are currently three five-star quarterbacks in the 2025 class in Lewis, Underwood and St. Clair, and while I wouldn’t force another one, it feels like there could be another one.
KJ Lacy, who has committed to Texas, Rivals 5 starsOr maybe Notre Dame freshman Deuce Knight has been very good in recent tournaments, or maybe a surprise pops up later in the recruiting cycle. Florida State freshman Tramell Jones has been very consistent, which could make him attractive to NFL teams in the first round.
Not every playmaker with a chance to elevate to five-star status will be in Jacksonville next week, but the stage is set for many big names to arrive for the marquee event.

Julian Lewis to USC. KJ Lacy to Texas. Deuce Knight to Notre Dame. Akili Smith Jr. to Oregon. Tramell Jones to Florida State. Keylon Russell to Alabama. Tavian St. Clair to Ohio State.
The only uncommitted quarterback Rivals 5 stars Brady Smigiel is the only quarterback in the conference who will compete in 2026. But aside from Smith, Russell, Lacy, St. Clair and Jones (depending on who you talk to), many of the committed quarterbacks have their eyes set on others.
Lewis has been committed to USC since August, but Auburn and Colorado are also in hot pursuit. Knight has been committed to Notre Dame for years, but Ole Miss is in hot pursuit. And Florida continues to pursue Jones (and other QBs) in hopes of landing a player in the 2025 class. It will be interesting to hear from many of these players in Jacksonville next week.
