SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Excessive rain and flooding in southeastern South Dakota led to the closure of many businesses, roads and events on Friday, June 21st.

This is a developing story that will be updated throughout the day. If you know of any rain closures, please email news@keloland.com..

Road closure

Lincoln County

Lincoln County Emergency Manager Harold Timmerman told KELOLAND News that people are being advised not to travel until the rain stops.

“We advise against travel unless absolutely necessary until after the next rainy season,” Timmerman said.

Turner County

The Turner County Sheriff’s Office has issued a no-travel order.

“Up to 5 inches of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook. “Many roads in Turner County are flooded. Well crews are working to mark all the locations where water has crossed roads, this will take some time. If you must go somewhere, be prepared to make a detour and avoid crossing flooded roads.”

According to South Dakota 511, I-29 is closed due to flooding between mile markers 59 and 64. Please consider alternate routes until further notice. I-29 between the Iowa state line and Sioux Falls is closed due to a construction project that was submerged by floodwaters.

I-90 near Brandon

South Dakota 511 says westbound travelers may experience flooding within a 3-mile to 1-mile radius east of exit 364 on U.S. 81 until further notice.

I-90 Westbound in Minnesota

I-90 is closed between Luverne and Worthington due to flooding, according to Minnesota 511. Please choose an alternate route.
