Ron DeSantis takes aim at Pride Month by restricting colored lights on bridges

Like most American patriots, I live in constant dread of seeing a bridge or causeway lit up in any color other than red, white, and blue.

That’s why I stand on a pile of Donald Trump-endorsed Bibles and applaud the heroic actions of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in banning all lights other than red, white and blue from the state’s bridges as part of his “Freedom Summer” initiative.

Nothing symbolizes freedom more than telling people they can only use three government approved colors. This is America. You can’t light up your infrastructure any color you want. That’s color socialism.

DeSantis believes in only three colors: red, white and blue

From Memorial Day through Labor Day in 2024, all of Florida's bridges, including the Ringling Causeway Bridge shown here, will be lit up in red, white and blue. The initiative was announced by Florida Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue on May 8 and is part of the Florida State Legislature. "Summer of Freedom" celebration.

Florida Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue, who appears to dislike unpatriotic colors like green and purple, posted on social media: “As Floridians prepare for the Summer of Freedom, Florida’s bridges will follow suit and light up red, white and blue from Memorial Day through Labor Day! Thanks to @GovRonDeSantis’ leadership, Florida will continue to be the freest state in the nation.”

That’s right! Freedom, baby!

The freedom to not have to see a light that reminds me of the American flag or that American flag-themed t-shirt with an eagle on it that I bought on Amazon.

Governor DeSantis’ Bridge Lighting Decision Limits Pride Month Displays

As soon as this great news was announced, liberals were outraged simply because the state-mandated ban on certain colors coincided, purely by coincidence, with Pride Month in June.

Kimberly Allen, who runs a Jacksonville advocacy group that promotes diversity and inclusion, told The Washington Post (which I don’t read because it’s liberal fake news), “I think the underlying meaning of this is disturbing: Why is this happening at this moment, this month, why now?”

Thank you, Biden:Chuck E. Cheese’s animatronic bands will be phased out. Thank you very much, Joe Biden.

It is happening now because Governor DeSantis said it is happening now, and it is happening because, as he says, it is “freedom.”

And if you think DeSantis is intentionally trying to undermine Pride Month, we have good news for you: he’s too busy doing important, uniting causes like making trans kids feel horrible and making anyone who says the word “gay” in school get eaten by alligators. Just kidding!

DeSantis is appropriating civil rights language while attacking civil rights.

The Ringling Causeway Bridge in Sarasota, Florida, is lit up in celebration of 2021 Pride Month.

Some accused the governor of trying to appropriate the name “Freedom Summer.”

Prominent liberal Bill Kristol posted on social media: “Does anyone else find it a little grotesque that DeSantis has appropriated the term ‘Freedom Summer’ from the noble and courageous effort to allow black people to register to vote in Mississippi in 1964 to lighting up a bridge in Florida in false patriotism in 2024?”

I don’t know where the so-called historical information he is referring to came from, but it is certainly not something Governor DeSantis would allow in Florida history textbooks.

Whatever. I’m not going to be convinced by stupid facts that it’s a bad idea for elected officials to control what parts of the visible spectrum we can see.

In previous summers, many of Florida’s major bridges would have been lit up in colors celebrating everything from Pride Month to Juneteenth to Women’s Equality Day to National Recovery Month. But not anymore. It’s red, white, blue or whatever. Residents of the “freest state in the nation” have absolute freedom to love only those colors.

Thankfully, Governor DeSantis understands that our beautiful bridges should never be used for indoctrination. They should be used as a constant and poignant reminder that the only thing that matters is patriotism and faithfully embracing our government-mandated color choices.
