ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Expansion plans are underway at the Round Rock Sports Center, with construction expected to wrap up in early 2026. City officials said in a release Monday that once the development is complete, the facility will add two new courts for a total of eight courts.
The Round Rock Sports Center first opened in January 2014 to support both sports recreation and events. The existing 82,800-square-foot facility features six basketball courts that can also be used as 12 volleyball courts, according to a release.
After the expansion, the new floor plan can be reconfigured to “host 16 courts for volleyball tournaments or six courts for basketball and cheerleading tournaments simultaneously,” officials said.
“Sports tourism in Round Rock has generated more than $162 million in economic activity for the city since the Sports Center opened,” Chad McKenzie, director of sports management and tourism, said in the release. “This expansion project will enable Round Rock to remain competitive with other communities in hosting a variety of events and attracting premier events.”
The center has hosted numerous state and national level events, including the USA Deaf Basketball National Championships, Texas Taekwondo Championships, and National Cheerleading and Dance Championships.
In addition to events, the facility will also host youth basketball, volleyball, fitness camps, sports training and resident recreation. More information on events and programs can be found online.
During this construction period the centre will remain accessible and facilities will be fully operational. Some courts and restrooms will be temporarily unavailable during construction and parking spaces may be reduced or altered during the expansion.
The project is being funded through the City of Round Rock’s 2023 bond package, with a list price of $274 million.
