Construction is currently underway on an expansion of the Round Rock Sports Center, with the project scheduled for completion by early 2026. The development will add two new courts, bringing the total number of courts at the facility to eight.

Opened in January 2014, the Round Rock Sports Center has established itself as a premier facility for sports and events. Currently, the 82,800 square foot indoor floor plan features six basketball courts that can be converted into 12 volleyball courts.

The expansion will have a separate entrance and is designed to provide greater operational and event management flexibility. The new courts will enable the facility to host larger and more diverse events. For example, the facility can be configured to accommodate a volleyball tournament on 16 courts or separated to host a basketball tournament and cheerleading competition simultaneously on six courts.

“Sports tourism in Round Rock has generated more than $162 million in economic activity for the city since the Sports Center opened,” said Chad McKenzie, director of sports management and tourism. “This expansion project will enable Round Rock to remain competitive with other communities in hosting a variety of events and attracting premier events.”

The Sports Center has hosted numerous state and national events, including the U.S. Senior Judo Championships, Texas State Taekwondo Championships, iSET Collegiate Table Tennis National Championships, U.S. Deaf Basketball National Championships, and various national cheer and dance competitions. The influx of visitors to sporting events supports local businesses, hotels and restaurants, providing a steady source of revenue and enhancing the city’s reputation as the “Sports Capital of Texas.”

The venue will also host youth basketball, volleyball, fitness camps, sports training and recreational activities for local residents. A complete list of events and programs can be found at rrsportscenter.com.

During the works period the existing Sports Centre will remain open and fully operational and there will be short periods when individual courts and toilets will be temporarily unavailable, however these disruptions will be organised in advance to ensure planned events and court bookings are not impacted.

Additionally, some phases of construction will reduce or change available parking spaces in the south parking lot, but will not affect the main east parking lot.

The project is part of the City of Round Rock’s massive 2023 bond package approved by voters in May 2023. The bond package, totaling $274 million, includes significant investments in parks, recreation, sports and public safety facilities. For more information, visit roundrocktexas.gov/bond.
