Jonathan Behnke, chief information officer for San Diego, the eighth-largest city in the nation, discussed his role and his department’s priorities in a recent interview. Government Technologyour sister publication Industry Insider — California.

Behnke served as CIO for the last 10 of his 15 years with City Hall, having previously worked in the private sector.

In a brief but comprehensive interview, Mike Driessen said: Industry Insider Behnke, who is vice president of publisher and subscription services at parent company e.Republic, spoke with Behnke about the scope of his role, his background, and how the city is leveraging managed services to enhance its internal IT operations.

Behnke, a frequent speaker at industry forums and conferences, previously said: Industry Insider There, he explained how the CIO role has changed to become more aligned with the business and strategy of the organization, which in San Diego’s case is a sprawling organization.

  • Behnke’s department serves 13,000 technology users.
  • This fast-growing city government of 1.4 million people has an annual IT budget of approximately $137 million.
  • Behnke’s division oversees and manages technology for a number of functions, including data centers, cloud, some utilities, call centers and web services.

Mr. Behnke is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lutheran University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

He will be one of the speakers at the San Diego Digital Government Summit* on June 27th.
