Rob Lloyd, who has served as San Jose, California’s deputy mayor for aviation, transportation and technology since 2016, was appointed interim chief technology officer and director of information technology for the city of Seattle by Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell on Thursday.

Harrell selected Lloyd after a nationwide search that began this spring and included consultations with Seattle’s IT department and other city officials, which drew 300 applicants and ultimately led to four finalists.

Lloyd is scheduled to begin his new role in Seattle on June 24.

“I am honored to join the City of Seattle and the Seattle community. One Seattle Initiatives is compelling because it addresses today’s great city challenges in a direct and smart way,” Lloyd said in the announcement. “I look forward to working with the team and partners to contribute to their mission. I thank the Seattle staff for their extraordinary generosity throughout the hiring process. This is an incredible organization on every level.”

Lloyd previously served as Chief Information Officer for the City of San Jose, where he is recognized for advancing privacy, equity through technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity alliances, and 311 as a community platform. He is also recognized for leading the City of San Jose’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and mentoring other technology stakeholders on procurement, devastation mitigation, citizen engagement, and strategic planning.

Lloyd has also held IT leadership roles in the states of Arizona, Oregon and Colorado. He is a member of the National Privacy Council, the National Council for Equality and the Asian Pacific American Council of Municipal Officials, and is past president of the Metropolitan Information Exchange, a national association of local government technology executives.

“Seattle is a world-leading technology hub, and I’m thrilled that Rob will join the team and support our One Seattle vision of being the premier government in the world to leverage technology to better serve our community,” Harrell said in the announcement. “Rob is a well-known and respected leader in his field, and I believe his knowledge, experience and dedication to public service will help him succeed in the role that touches on everything we do as a City.”
