St. George — Santa Clara will have a new senior living center when Snow Canyon Retirement Community opens this fall.

The facility will incorporate “lifelong learning” in partnership with the Utah Tech Institute for Continuing Learning.
Future education for residents is planned through monthly on-site presentations, with classes available both in-person and via Zoom.
Colton Balmforth, executive director of Snow Canyon Retirement Community, said their goal is to make lifelong learning accessible to everyone, regardless of age, physical limitations or pre-existing cognitive disabilities.
“This was one of the first partnerships we sought out for the community,” Balmforth said. “We’re excited to be able to offer a unique event.”
The educational program will initially be coordinated by Dr. Robert Kramer, director of the Utah Tech Institute for Continuing Learning, and current plans call for future classes to be selected with resident input.
The names of the course’s instructors have yet to be released, but many are rumored to hold advanced degrees in science, business and psychology.
Courses include:
- The Gift of Imperfection
- America Adrift
- Geology
- History of Washington County
- Walking with the Doctor
About the Community
Besides the partnership, another unique feature of the property is its boutique size, which Kim VanCoffier, a consultant for Snow Canyon Retirement Communities, said is a big advantage.
“This 55-and-over community is unique in terms of location, services and amenities,” VanCoffier said.
Special amenities include multiple care options for seniors, valet parking, a 24-hour concierge and multiple dining options.

“We will be offering an 18-hole putting course, electric vehicle charging stations, a saltwater pool and spa and a gallery corridor,” Van Coffier said, “just to name a few.”
According to a press release from Snow Canyon Retirement Community, the plan is to bring in a significant amount of staff to maintain the facility. Vancouffier said the company is patient and looking for only the best candidates, and the hiring process continues.
“We attract great talent because of our quality community environment and services,” Vancofier said.
The community will offer a variety of living options, from individual homes with universal design features to small apartments and an intimate memory care facility with 15 private suites.
In total, there are 44 custom-designed homes available in eight different layouts, with floor plans ranging from 2,500 to 3,100 sq. ft. Residents can choose from independent living, assisted living or dementia care, allowing them to age in place as their needs change.
“Our senior living communities offer residents the opportunity to remain active and independent for as long as they wish,” says Vancouffier. “Features include high ceilings, no steps, large door openings and threshold-free showers.”
