World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler recovered from a triple bogey midway through the round to extend his lead to four strokes after the third round of the Memorial Tournament.
The 27-year-old Scheffler, who had led the previous day, was two under after eight holes but hit his tee shot into a tree on the ninth hole, erasing his three-stroke lead.
But the American regained his composure and started with a birdie on the next hole, then added two more birdies and a bogey on the 18th to finish with a one-under 71.
“I feel like I didn’t hit many shots off the line today, and then the triple came up and all of a sudden I’m one-over par,” Scheffler said of the frustrating ninth hole.
“The break was definitely frustrating, but overall, my swing is still pretty good so I didn’t feel like I needed to change anything and just keep the right mindset.”
The two-time Masters champion is at 10 under par heading into Sunday’s final round at Muirfield Village, Ohio, four strokes ahead of Canada’s Adam Hadwin, America’s Collin Morikawa and Austria’s Sepp Straka.
Morikawa and Straka both shot 4-under 68 to move into a tie for second place with first-round leader Hadwin (72).
PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg are tied for fifth at four under par.
The tournament is one of the PGA Tour’s signature events, with 73 players competing for $20 million (£15.6 million) in prize money, and takes place ahead of next week’s US Open at Pinehurst.
