A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of former Chicago Police Department explosives technician Larry Newman earlier this month, Chicago police announced Friday.

The boy, whose identity was not immediately released, is believed to be one of two people who approached and killed Newman, 73, on June 20. Police said he was charged as an adult and is scheduled to appear before a judge for a detention hearing on Saturday in Leighton Criminal Court.

Authorities already charged 16-year-old Lazarius Watt on Monday. A judge ordered Watt held in custody until the end of his trial on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said at Watt’s detention hearing that he was one of two teenage boys who approached Newman as he was paying for his lawn to be mowed. When Watt took aim, witnesses said, Newman reached for his own weapon and fired one shot at the pair.

Newman was shot multiple times in the chest and leg and was pronounced dead a short time later at Stroger Hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.

Police arrested a second suspect Thursday in the 2400 block of East 75th Street. In addition to two counts of first-degree murder, the teen is also charged with one count of armed robbery in connection with a November 2023 robbery in the Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.
