SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Seminole County is trying to bring more people to the area for sports tourism.
Leaders discussed the creation of tourism improvement districts.

Tuesday’s county meeting is a big step toward enacting new rules and ordinances to attract more sports tourism to the area.
This would be a way to raise funds specifically for sports tourism instead of using regular tax dollars.
The county is working out the details of the new rules, which would require approval from hotels in the county.
It’s like a special tax zone for hotels. They pay a little extra, which goes toward sports tourism projects that can help the county’s economy.
This is similar to Seminole County’s tourism tax, but focuses on hotels and sports tourism.

However, the tourism improvement district does not impose taxes on county residents. Instead, hotels will charge visitors a fee to stay in their rooms.
Commissioners will vote to give the hotel and tourism authority the green light to create the tourism improvement district. It will then be up to hotel and tourism authorities to decide how to create special areas.
