AMRITSAR: Pakistani Sikhs claim they are apprehensive that the developments surrounding Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in Indian Punjab are weakening the political parties that are their political backers here and the institutions that are their traditional source of religious guidance outside the Akal Takht. Ramesh Singh Arora, Chairman of Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) and Pakistani Punjab’s first Sikh Minister and Minister for Minority Affairs, said, “Sikhs across the world who regard SGPC as the highest authority of their faith are disappointed by the allegations made by the dissident Akalis against its leadership. Pakistani Sikhs want SGPC to be more powerful and influential and represent them competently across the world. The weakening of SGPC is alarming news for us.” Reacting to allegations made by Akali rebels against SAD chairman Sukhbir Singh Badal, Arora said “if there has been any case of blasphemy, violation of Mariyada (Sikh religious code of conduct), atrocities against Sikh youth or similar, there should be an investigation and justice.” Mahinderpal Singh, minority leader in former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party, asserted that the Akalis are closely monitoring events in India, where they are at odds with the SGPC and the SGPC.
