Following the Labour Party’s landslide victory in the general elections, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday criticised the BJP, saying: “It is a scam. “Abu ki baal, 400 per.” Finally it happened in another country.
Ahead of India’s Lok Sabha elections, BJP leaders had predicted the party would win more than 370 seats, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would win more than 400.
In the election that ended last month, the BJP fell short of a majority, winning 240 seats, while the NDA took power with 293 seats.
The Indian National Congress won 99 seats, while the Indian Union won 234. After the vote, two independents declared their support for the Indian National Congress, giving the Indian Union 236 seats.
Posting on X, Tharoor said, “Finally ‘Ab Ki Baar 400 Par’ has happened. But in another country!”
Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the Indian National Congress, said that with tectonic changes taking place in the UK, it was worth remembering the political events that took place in India a month ago.
“A person who declared himself a non-biological person was not elected as the party chief by his own party members and was appointed as the leader of the alliance. This flouts all Congress norms and is a futile attempt to save face after a post-election period when he is greatly weakened, damaged and has suffered a crucial defeat personally, politically and morally,” Ramesh said.
Keir Starmer became Britain’s new prime minister on Friday, vowing to rebuild the country. Just hours after his Labour party won a landslide victory in the general election, exhausted voters handed a “harsh verdict” to Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party.
Labour won 412 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, an increase of 211 seats since the 2019 election.
Sunak’s Conservative Party won just 121 seats, 250 fewer than in 2019. Labour received 33.7% of the vote compared to the Conservatives’ 23.7%.
