GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Sheboygan’s Lacey Abel is vying for one of 12 spots on Team USA Flag Football ahead of this summer’s World Championship in Finland.
The quarterback is one of 18 finalists heading to training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina, later this month. Her soccer career had humble beginnings.
“As a kid, I only played with my brother and dad and a bunch of boys in the neighborhood because they were the only guys I knew who played soccer,” Abel said. Ta. “I’ve learned that there’s now a huge community of phenomenal women who love to play and they’re some of the smartest players I know. It’s amazing. Definitely I I found some of my best friends through soccer.”
Abel played for Mile High Blades in the Women’s Football Alliance and won the championship in 2022. The connections she made there led her to where she is today.
“Through tackle football, I ended up meeting friends who were like, ‘Hey, we play travel ball, would you like to come play in these tournaments?'” Abel said. When I went to the tournament, there were so many teams, so many women’s teams, so many people who loved soccer and were so good at soccer, and I thought, “What is this? ?”I thought. I want to be more involved in that. ”
That journey will culminate in the USA Football national team’s training camp later this month, where Lacey hopes to secure one of 12 spots to head to Finland for the world championship. In his spare time, he shared his love of sports by coaching his high school football team in Colorado.
“We won state last year,” Abel said. “It was one of the most exciting experiences. I was more excited than any win ever, to be honest. It was amazing just watching them do their job. It’s so much fun. You I’ve had a great experience with the team and I’ve built a bond with them. It’s a phenomenal sport and there are a lot of opportunities in this sport, especially for women.”
