Sikkim Assembly Elections 2024 Results: The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) returned to power for a second consecutive term in the Himalayan state on Sunday, June 2, after winning 31 seats in the 32-member Assembly, securing a majority.
SKM’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang won in Lenok constituency by a margin of over 7,000 votes and also won in Soren Chakun constituency.
The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which ruled the state for 25 consecutive years until 2019, won just one seat, according to the Election Commission of India’s website. SDF leader and former chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling lost in both seats he contested. The state assembly elections were held on April 19, simultaneously with the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
In Pokhrok Kamran constituency, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha’s Bhoj Raj Rai secured 8,037 votes while Chamling got 4,974 votes, he said.
The Sikkim Democratic Front supremo lost the Namchebun assembly election to SKM’s Raju Basnet by 2,256 votes. Basnet got 7,195 votes while Chamling got 4,939 votes.
The majority in the Sikkim State Assembly is 17 seats.
Counting of votes in Sikkim’s 32 assembly seats began at 6 am amid tight security arrangements.
Former India football captain and SDF candidate Baichung Bhutia was trailing his SKM rival Riksal Dorje Bhutia by 2,872 votes in the Barhun constituency.
In the 2019 provincial assembly elections, the SKM won 17 seats and the SDF won 15. Exit polls have predicted that the SKM will return to power in the province.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP on Sunday won 37 seats in the 60-seat assembly, securing a majority and returning to power for the third consecutive term.
Counting is underway for 50 Lok Sabha seats, which were held in the northeastern state on April 19. The remaining 10 seats were won by the saffron party unopposed. Of the 50 seats, the BJP has won 27 and is leading in the other eight.
Pema Khandu was one of 10 candidates who were elected unopposed. The saffron party won 41 seats in 2019.
The National People’s Party (NPP) won three seats and is leading in an equal number of constituencies, officials said.
