The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup is fast approaching. As teams prepare for the biennial event to be held in June in the West Indies and the United States, all eyes will be on the center stage staging of the tournament’s most classic matchup. As arch-rivals India and Pakistan meet for the ninth time in a marquee event to be held at Nassau County Stadium on June 9, ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley has some interesting thoughts on the venue. I came up with an insight.
Comparing it to India’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, Tetley said the standard of the ground is on par with other international stadiums.
“Whenever a new stadium comes along, many questions arise about its size. But the Nassau County site is not a token-sized site, measuring 75 yards east-west and 67 yards north-south from the center. It will be as big as Wankhede.The drainage facilities will also be world class,” he said.
Interestingly, the venue was once a city park, which the ICC has converted into a state-of-the-art cricket facility. The stadium has his six practice pitches near the ground in addition to his four center wickets and drop-in pitches used in tournaments.
Adelaide Oval’s chief curator, Damian Hough, oversaw the preparation of the venue’s pitch in Florida, which was later transported by truck to New York. Huff revealed that the idea is for the surface to have good pace and bounce, creating a good pitch that players can enjoy playing on.
“The pitch should have speed and bounce, the ball should come to the bat and that should be what the players like. “The idea is to create a good pitch that stays in good condition throughout the tournament and the players want to play. It’s about having fun,” he said.
Fans will be looking forward to this match as one of the favorite match-ups in the league as both India and Pakistan will once again recreate their long-standing rivalry. The last time the two teams met in the T20 World Cup was in 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where India defeated Pakistan in a thrilling battle. Fans will be in for a real treat if the Florida-based venue can witness half of what happens in Australia.
