KARACHI:

The Sindh Bar Council has demanded the immediate removal of Governor of Sindh, Kamran Tessori, by President Asif Ali Zardari, declaring political activities at the Governor House to be in violation of the Constitution.

A resolution against the governor was approved during the 109th meeting of the Sindh Bar Council, held on February 21, which decided that the “involvement of the Governor of Sindh in political activities and using Governor House for political activities is in violation of the Constitution.”

The council demanded that the president immediately remove Tessori from his post, with the resolution stating, “The House demands immediate removal of the Governor Sindh as he has proved himself unfit for representing the federation.”

Further, it emphasised that constitutional positions must remain above politics and that the governor should remain impartial as a representative of the federation.

The statement added that no compromise will be accepted on the unity and integrity of Sindh, and stated, “We also call upon the PPPP to clearly state its party position regarding power-sharing arrangements in the federal government with political parties that have advocated narratives relating to the division of Sindh.”

While demanding assurance of constitutional protection for the people of the province, the council said, “The people of Sindh deserve clarity and assurance that the province’s unity and constitutional status will not be compromised under any political arrangement.”

The Sindh Bar Council also noted that even absent members of the council had endorsed the resolution.

On February 20, Sindhi nationalist leaders accused Tessori of turning the Governor House into a platform for what they described as ethnic politics, following a recent event attended by the leadership of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).

Ayaz Latif Palijo, leader of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek, alleged that the Governor House had been reduced to a “centre for hatching conspiracies against Sindh and Pakistan.” He claimed that any attempt to undermine Sindh amounted to a threat to Pakistan’s integrity.

A day later, Senior Minister and Minister for Information Sharjeel Inam Memon condemned what he termed hateful and linguistically-biased speeches delivered at a recent ceremony at the Governor House, describing the choice of words and ideas as deeply regrettable.

Sharjeel also criticised inappropriate references to state institutions during the event, saying such discussions are not suitable for a constitutional platform and undermine civic harmony.

He expressed concern over elected representatives using such platforms to deliver biased messages, noting that the incident, particularly involving MQM members, addressing each other, threatens Karachi’s culture of peace and brotherhood.
