Lanjar orders strict surveillance at railway stations, bus terminals, truck depots, cargo facilities to ensure safety

KARACHI:

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar on Thursday called for heightened security measures across the province, emphasising stricter protocols at airports and key public sites to safeguard citizens in light of recent incidents. He said, “We must make security foolproof at airports; only one or two people will be allowed for pick-up and drop-off.”

A high-level emergency meeting, chaired by Lanjar at the Sindh Assembly, reviewed the rising security challenges in the province.

The meeting was convened in light of recent increases in terrorist activities nationwide, particularly in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Balochistan, which have raised concerns about the overall security situation. Security forces have intensified operations to counter threats, targeting terrorist groups attempting to infiltrate from the Afghan border.

Lanjar further directed that railway stations, bus terminals, truck depots, and other cargo facilities be placed under strict surveillance to prevent breaches and ensure public safety.

Highlighting Karachi’s significance as the economic hub of Pakistan, he urged closer cooperation between the police and other law enforcement agencies. He also recommended implementing comprehensive standard operating procedures for swift responses at incident sites.

The home minister stressed inter-provincial coordination and ordered all prisons in Sindh to ensure the availability of device-tracking apps. These devices will be used during snap checks, picketing, and combing operations at key locations.

The meeting also addressed the deployment of female searchers at both internal and external points at the provincial level. Lanjar instructed authorities to conduct a strict crackdown on public weapons display, in accordance with the National Action Plan.

Additionally, he stressed the effective enforcement of the Rental Law Act to ensure compliance with existing regulations.

A day earlier, four police officers were martyred and two others injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on an Ababeel Police Force patrol in the Nawi Killi area of Khar Tehsil in K-P’s Bajaur District.

On Tuesday, two policemen were martyred, and several others were injured after a suicide attack targeted an inter-provincial checkpost in the Dajal area of Punjab’s Bhakkar.

In a separate incident, five policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), were martyred and four others injured when terrorists attacked a police van in the Lachi area of K-P’s Kohat. Two detainees were also killed in the incident.

The attack took place when a police team led by DSP Lachi Asad Mahmood Khan was transporting detainees for investigation. Unidentified armed men opened sudden and indiscriminate fire on the vehicle.
