Former Herald Baseball Player of the Year Eric Segura has been selected to participate in the USA Collegiate Baseball National Team training camp.

The former Soledad hurler and Oregon State University freshman will attend a camp in Cary, North Carolina, this week before being selected to play in the International Friendly Series, where the U.S. national team will play five games against Chinese Taipei.

Segura, a right-hander who was named All-Pac 12 honorable mention this spring for nationally ranked Oregon State, started 15 games as a true freshman, second-highest on the team.

The 6-foot-2 Segura posted a 6-1 record with a 4.93 ERA while striking out 79 batters in 69 1/3 innings for the Beavers in the NCAA Super Regional in Lexington, Kentucky.

Oregon State also had Carmel graduate Javin Trosky on its roster, finishing the season with a 45-16 record and a ranking as high as seventh in the nation.

Segura was named the Herald’s 2022 Player of the Year after posting a 9-3 record with a 0.61 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 80 innings. He also batted .465 with Soledad and stole 13 bases.

Bering Closes the Chapter

Despite missing the final 14 games due to injury, Parma graduate JohnJohn Belling produced the best performance of his career this spring for the Santa Clara University baseball team.

Belling hit a career-high nine home runs (six more than he had in each of the previous three years), good for second on the team in just 38 games played.

The 5-foot-7, left-handed hitter with a powerful hit at the plate was second on the Broncos in runs scored (41) and third in RBIs (28) and hits (49).

Belling also led the Broncos in stolen bases, stealing 15 of 18 times and posting a .448 on-base percentage with 29 walks.

In four seasons with Santa Clara, Belling appeared in 141 games, batting .283 with 12 home runs and 69 RBIs.

Belling, a Parma baseball and football selection to the Herald’s All-County team, set career highs this spring in walks, home runs, doubles, RBIs and runs scored.
