Some North Carolina lawmakers oppose sports betting, including on college athletes

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — It’s been more than two months since legal sports betting began in North Carolina, and some lawmakers want to make changes.

“I was completely against sports betting, but now that we can have sports betting, I’ll put up with it, but let’s make sure it’s a sensible one,” said state Rep. Marcia Morey. .

Morey is leading the charge to ban prop bets on college athletes. Proposition His Bet allows bettors to bet on an individual player’s stat line.

“I’m a former Olympian, so I worry about the pressure it puts on the athletes. You can bet on the team, you can bet on them winning or losing, but individual athlete performance is overkill,” she explained. .

North Carolina is part of a dwindling number of states that allow this type of wagering. Louisiana voted to ban them earlier this year, and New Jersey and Wyoming are also considering changes.

“Yeah, I’d be disappointed if that happened,” one fan said of the ban.

Legalization came at a magical time with North Carolina State making it to the Final Four, so some fans are betting big on their favorite players.

“It was a big one with DJ Burns. It’s definitely a little more intense, but you can feel more of a connection to the players,” a fan explained.

The bill was roundly criticized in the General Assembly by some Republicans, including Jason Thain, who led the push to bring sports betting to North Carolina.

“The prop bet ban is just another tool for opponents of sports betting to attack a law that has been in place for less than six months,” Thain said.

The proposed bill would only affect bets on college athletes, not professional athletes.

Player prop wagers have come under increased scrutiny in recent months after NCAA President Charlie Baker opposed them during the NCAA Tournament in March and called on all states where they are legal to eliminate them. There is.
