On Wednesday, in collaboration with the Deputy Commissioner of Social Welfare, District Legal Services Authority and Youth Development and Activities Centre Pune, special camps were organised for third gender and transgender individuals for registration of identity cards, certificates and new voter ID cards.

At the camp held at Social Justice Bhawan, Vishrantwadi, 54 third gender and transgender persons registered their identity cards and 28 registered for new voter ID cards. The Deputy Commissioner of Social Welfare and the District Legal Services Office provided free stamp and notarisation services for issuance of these documents. Moreover, all the registered individuals were listed on a website for authentication.

The event was attended by advocate Vasant Kamble representing the District Legal Services Authority, Kadambari of Mangalkhuhi Kinnar Charitable Trust, Pritesh Kamble of Youth Development Activities Centre, Milan Labade and students of Maharshi Kalve Social Welfare College.

Voter awareness efforts accelerate

Meanwhile, voter awareness activities under the SVEEP campaign are being carried out as part of the special revision of the voters’ roll. Deputy Collector Archana Tambe has appealed to people to take part in these activities ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.

In Wadgaonchery constituency, various new voters registration camps were held at places like Barrister Vittarao Gadgil Prashara, Pankaj Asman Society, Annabau Sathe Auditorium, Annasaheb Magar Vidyalaya, Kumar Prime Vela Society, Panchsheel Nagar and Hamid Urdushala. In Sirur constituency, over 300 new voters were registered at a camp at Shikrapur organised by Jeevanjyoti Social Development Society and Sirur tehsil office. Public awareness efforts are also underway in Ambegaon constituency.

“A special voter roll revision campaign encourages people to register as voters till August 16, 2024. The campaign focuses on registering new voters, updating details and removing names of voters who have died or migrated. Citizens can access or use the Voter Helpline mobile app for online registration and updating details. A copy of the online application can be submitted to the Voter Registration Officer or Tehsil office,” Deputy District Election Officer Minal Kalaskar said, urging all voters who are not yet registered to do so.

Maharashtra is one of the eight states that are scheduled to hold state assembly elections this year. The term of the current Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end in 2024 and the next state assembly elections are expected to be held by October 2024 to elect all 288 members of the state assembly. However, the Election Commission of India is yet to finalize or announce the dates for the elections. Pune district has 21 assembly constituencies.

Meanwhile, political parties as well as the government have begun preparations for the next elections. Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah recently sounded the trumpet for the Maharashtra Assembly elections in Pune, claiming a landslide victory for the Mahayuti alliance. Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray is also scheduled to address a rally in the city in August.
