France will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. They will be held from July 26th to August 11th and August 28th to September 8th, 2024, respectively. France’s Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs is closely involved in these two major sporting events.

An (almost) unprecedented sports extravaganza in France

In 2024, France will host the Summer Olympics for the first time in 100 years and the first Paralympic Games in the country’s history. It attracts 15,000 athletes, more than 9,000 accredited journalists, and approximately 1.5 million spectators from around the world. The event will attract a large number of foreign spectators, and the number of television viewers is expected to be 4 billion.

The competition is distinguished by events held in the most emblematic and spectacular locations of Paris and the Ile-de-France region (Champ de Mars, Grand Palais, Invalides, Place de la Concorde, Versailles, etc.). The whole of France participates, beyond the capital, where the most magnificent monuments are displayed on this occasion. For example, the soccer tournament will be held in eight cities (Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Nice and Marseille), with sailing in Marseille and surfing in Tahiti.

In addition to the 28 Olympic sports, the Olympic Games feature four additional sports: sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing, and breaking. Paralympic athletes, on the other hand, will compete in 22 sports.

These Games will be a unique celebration of sport and Olympism, open to as many people as possible. For the first time, the Olympic opening ceremony on July 26, 2024 will not be held in a stadium, with delegates passing along the Seine in central Paris. Part of the Paralympic opening ceremony will be held on the Champs-Elysées and Place de la Concorde.

Unique diplomatic network action for the tournament

The Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a unique opportunity to promote France, its territory and its values. That is why French diplomacy has given full support to this project ever since its candidacy for the Paris 2024 Games.

France’s Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs has been mobilized for months to organize this major sporting event.

  • MEAE plays an important consular role in facilitating visa issuance for tens of thousands of Olympic and Paralympic families.
  • In the area of ceremonies, France will host many heads of state and government who will be visiting France for the Games. More than 100 such dignitaries are expected to attend the Olympic opening ceremony on July 26, 2024.
  • 146 embassies are already participating in the Terre de Jeu 2024 program and will contribute to the success of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and share this project with 2.5 million French citizens living abroad It shows the enthusiasm and ambition of our diplomatic network. Approximately 136 of them (more than 80% of the French diplomatic network) have organized an amazing “Round the World Relay” on March 14, 2024. There was 24-hour uninterrupted sports around the world. The event, which took place just weeks before the opening of the Olympics, highlighted the efforts of France’s diplomatic network and its determination to keep sport at the heart of its external activities.

Sustainability and restraint are at the heart of the competition

The Paris 2024 Organizing Committee has several strong environmental and social commitments, including:

  • The aim is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by half compared to the past 10 years and offset the CO2 emissions of the Games, with the aim of making the Games carbon neutral.
  • The convention venue will use 100% renewable energy.
  • We ensure that 95% of the infrastructure used is existing or temporary, with the aim that all temporary infrastructure is reused or recycled.
  • Ensure solutions for clean movement of athletes and spectators, especially at all venues accessible by public transport.
  • Ensure full gender equality among athletes eligible for the Olympic Games.
  • Stimulating economic activity through the creation of 150,000 jobs and over 1,200 small, medium and micro enterprises used as part of the procurement process.
  • To increase the economic attractiveness of the Seine-Saint-Denis department. The prefecture hosts 80% of the investment and most of the Olympic facilities.

Furthermore, in 2019 the French government adopted the Legacy Plan for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The plan aims to ensure that the Olympic and Paralympic Games improve the lives of the French people in various aspects, including economics, education, employment, healthcare and access for people with disabilities. Masu. Sports, culture, environment. The European and Foreign Affairs Ministry supports the implementation of this mechanism.
