High winds tonight collapsed a stage at a Mexican political rally, killing four people and sending presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Minez to hospital, Reuters reported.
The incident occurred in San Pedro Garza Garcia, a wealthy neighborhood in the northern state of Nuevo Leon. “Four people are reported dead and 15 injured,” Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in a tweet, citing the governor of Nuevo Leon, who was at the scene.
Dramatic video from the scene was posted online.
Mynes posted a statement saying he was on stage when he collapsed and was taken to a local hospital. He said he has since returned to the scene and is attempting to assist with efforts on the ground.
“After the accident in San Pedro Garza, a gust of wind caused the stage we were on to collapse and I was transferred to a hospital in San José. The only thing that matters now is to take care of the victims of the accident.”
Politician Lorenia Canavati, who co-headlined the rally, said: “Words cannot express the pain and grief that the horrific accident that occurred at our election event today has brought to everyone. Right now all I can think about is those affected and their families. My team and I are already coordinating with the authorities to ensure that they are given the utmost attention and support. Those are the most important things.”
