Daltonganj: Kalpana Murmu Soren, the newly elected JMM MP from Gandhi Assembly constituency, on Tuesday addressed a rally at Jhapura in Husainabad, Palamu to launch the party’s publicity drive ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled later this year. Capitalising on the Indian Union’s spirited performance in the state, which won four out of 14 seats, Kalpana sought to strike a chord with people by claiming that her husband, former chief minister Hemant Soren, who is in jail in a land scam case, is “my son”. “My husband was jailed in a false case to thwart development works and welfare schemes that were being rolled out under his management. In his absence, Champai Chacha (uncle) is running the business in a commendable manner,” she told the rally. Kalpana asserted that the Lok Sabha election results were a fitting response to the BJP’s style of politics and it was time to teach them another lesson (in the state elections). Kalpana’s publicity drive comes at a time when all major political parties in Jharkhand are in preparation mode after the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections. The JMM won 30 of the 81 seats in the state assembly in the 2019 elections and is poised to contest this year’s elections under the Indian Union. Though the JMM performed well in tribal reserved seats, it could not make a dent in the general seats. Hussainabad, one of the five constituencies that make up the Palamu Assembly constituency, has always pulled off surprises in state elections so far, winning candidates from the BSP, NCP and Congress. The BJP is yet to make a mark in the constituency. As the JMM aims to contest the constituency, Kalpana inducted Alok Kumar Singh (Tutu) into the party at a ceremony. Singh is the vice-chairman of the local Zilla Parishad.
