JAIPUR: Finance Minister Diya Kumari on Wednesday said the state government will set up a high-level committee to look into implementing ‘One State, One Election’ in Rajasthan. She said the committee will look into whether elections for urban (municipalities) and rural (panchayat) local bodies can be held simultaneously, following the Modi government’s ‘One Nation, One Election’ slogan. The committee will also assess the changes required in the structure of urban and rural local bodies and cooperative institutions in view of the current population growth in the state. The committee will also make recommendations regarding the creation and delimitation of urban and rural local bodies. “The committee will also look into the concept of ‘One State, One Election’ towards empowerment of urban local bodies and panchayati raj institutions with a view to saving resources, effort and time,” Kumari said while presenting the budget. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Tikaram Juri said parties would closely watch how the government implements the proposal. “This proposal cannot be implemented in the state. There are different cycles for panchayati raj elections and urban local bodies elections. The government wants to implement this proposal as it fears losing the elections. It has no control over the status quo. That’s why it doesn’t want to hold local body elections in the state. The government just wants to take control of panchayati raj institutions and local bodies by force,” he said.
