Target stock falls due to poor performance

Shares fell nearly 7% early after the retailer reported lower-than-expected profits and lower sales.

The company earned $2.03 a share, compared with the $2.06 a share analysts polled by LSEG had expected. Revenue of $24.53 billion was roughly in line with expectations, as consumers bought less food and household goods at retail stores.

European markets open low

European markets opened lower on Wednesday, with all major exchanges starting the day in the red following the release of the UK’s latest inflation figures.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 was down 0.34% at 8:10 a.m. London time.

Meanwhile, the UK’s FTSE 100 lost 0.52%, Germany’s DAX lost 0.4% and France’s CAC 40 lost 0.43%.

Auto stocks fell 2.3%, and oil and gas stocks fell 0.74%.

Seven of the S&P 500’s 11 sectors ended Tuesday higher.

Seven out of a total of 11 sectors ended Tuesday’s session higher.

Utilities led the rally, limiting the day’s gain to 0.97%, followed by consumer staples and financials. Meanwhile, energy was the worst laggard, dropping 0.51%.

While all sectors are down less than 10% from their 52-week highs, the tech sector set a new record in Tuesday’s trading.

Stocks that moved the most after the close: Urban Outfitters, Toll Brothers, etc.

The most volatile stocks in long-term trading are:

  • Urban Outfitters — The clothing retailer beat expectations in the first quarter, increasing nearly 8%.
  • Viasat — The carrier’s stock price fell nearly 13% after Viasat posted a loss of 80 cents per share in its fiscal fourth quarter.
  • Toll Brothers – The home builder’s stock rose more than 1%. Toll Brothers reported second-quarter earnings of $4.55 per share on revenue of $2.65 billion. Analyst estimates compiled by LSEG were for earnings of $4.14 per share and revenue of $2.53 billion.
