NEW DELHI: A day after Britain accused China of providing “lethal aid” to Russia against Ukraine, the Chinese embassy has urged Britain to stop making “baseless accusations” against it and “stop adding fuel to the fire on the Ukraine issue”. The Chinese embassy further stressed China’s position on the Ukraine issue, saying China has “actively promoted peace talks”.
Britain’s defence secretary said on Wednesday that US and UK defence intelligence agencies have evidence of “current or upcoming flows of lethal material assistance from China to Russia and then Ukraine”, adding: “I think this is a significant development.”
In response, the Chinese Embassy in the UK said, “We urge the UK to stop making groundless accusations against China, stop adding fuel to the fire over the Ukraine issue, seriously consider its role in international peace and security, and take genuine action for world peace and justice.”
“Regarding the Ukraine issue, China has always adhered to an objective and fair stance, actively promoted peace negotiations and promoted a political settlement,” the spokesman added.
“When it comes to military exports, China has always adopted a prudent and responsible stance and has consistently managed the export of dual-use goods in accordance with laws and regulations,” the spokesman said.
China has deepened trade and military ties with Russia in recent years after the United States and its allies imposed sanctions on both countries, particularly Moscow, over their invasion of Ukraine.
