Stop & Shop announced it will close 32 underperforming grocery stores across five New England states by the end of the year.
The regional grocery chain, owned by Ahold Delhaize USA Company, announced plans for store closures in the following states on Friday:
“Stop & Shop is proud of its deep roots and community ties as a local grocer for more than 100 years and remains committed to serving our employees, customers and the communities we serve,” said Stop & Shop president Gordon Reed. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop evaluated its entire store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores in order to create a healthy foundation for the brand’s future growth.”
Grocery stores in five states are set to close by November 2. The closures will be completed in stages, the company said.
The chain said it would keep 350 stores open in five states.

Stop & Shop employs 58,000 people and operates about 400 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, according to the announcement.
A spokesperson told USA Today the company is working with employees before the stores close.
“All employees at the 32 affected stores will be offered other opportunities within the company,” Caroline Medeiros, Stop & Shop’s corporate communications manager, said in a statement. “We will notify local customers in advance of store closure dates.”

Stop & Shop’s future plans
Though the company announced it would close 32 stores across five New England states, the grocery chain is also looking ahead to its future plans.
“While this news is tough, I am proud to be retaining our associates and investing in the Stop & Shop brand for future growth, especially by lowering prices and improving the customer experience through renovations,” Medeiros said. “Since 2018, we have completed renovations of more than 190 stores with the customer’s shopping experience in mind, and these stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop locations that have not been renovated.”
